Son Heung-Min allowed by Tottenham to play in Olympics for South Korea

Son Heung-Min says Tottenham Hotspur have given him the green light to play in this summer's Olympic Games with South Korea, although the timing of his release remains undecided.

Son, 23, has previously said he is eager to play in the tournament in Rio de Janeiro, and South Korea's Olympic coach Shin Tae-Young has indicated he will pick the forward as a wild card if he is available.

Olympic squads are restricted to players aged under 23 with three over-aged wild card players also permitted.

South Korea will need Tottenham's permission to pick Son, who turns 24 in July, because the Olympic tournament is not part of FIFA's international match calendar.

The Koreans' first match is against Fiji on Aug. 4 and Shin says he wants to assemble the squad for training in early-July.

Spurs, who travel to Australia for a preseason tournament in late-July, may prefer to release Son at a later date -- something the player is eager to avoid.

"My club told me that I can play for the Rio Games, but what's important is the timing of my release. I want to join the Olympic team quickly and play with teammates," Son told the Yonhap News Agency. "My goal is to help South Korea to win another Olympic medal. I'm also working hard to be called up as soon as possible."

Son could be on international duty until late-August, ruling him out of a significant chunk of Spurs' preseason and the start of the 2016-17 campaign.

However, athletes who earn an Olympic medal are exempt from South Korea's mandatory two-year military service -- obligatory for all citizens -- which could be beneficial to the North London club in the future.
