Spurs' Dele Alli could face violent conduct ban for striking Claudio Yacob

Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli could face retrospective discipline from the FA after replays showed him appearing to punch West Brom's Claudio Yacob in Monday's game.

After showing off his PFA Young Player of the Year award before kickoff, Alli was involved in confrontation with Yacob in the 26th minute of the 1-1 draw.

With referee Mike Jones watching the ball on the wing, Yacob jostled Alli as the players ran into the box. Alli responded by spinning and striking the West Brom player in his midriff.

The action could prematurely end Alli's season if the FA follows precedent and charges him with violent conduct and a three-match ban.

In September, Chelsea's Diego Costa was retroactively suspended for three games for putting his hands to the face of Arsenal centre-back Laurent Koscielny.

Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger was also banned three games in December after elbowing West Ham's Winston Reid on a play that was missed by officials but captured on video.

Alli has lost his temper before this season, as Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew accused Alli of stamping on Yohan Cabaye in January.

The 20-year-old also appeared to kick out at Fiorentina's Nenad Tomovic in the Europa League in February.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino admitted that Alli was prone to strong reactions when provoked.

"I hear some comments but I have no time to see the action,'' Pochettino said. "Sometimes the opponent find him and try to provoke, they know he has a strong character and may react.

"I don't know what has happened, we will see. I have nothing to comment now but Dele has a strong character if you wind him up.''

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said Alli is earning a reputation as a player whom opponents can target to incite violence.

"He's been involved in these things now and again. There was the Europa League game against Fiorentina earlier this season," Carragher said on Sky Sports. "You like the fact that he's got something about him.

"From the start of the game Yacob wound Alli up. Alli wasn't too happy about a challenge early on, so right from the start he fell into a bit of a trap.

"People will try and wind him up because they know he's got a bit of a short temper. There's a little right hook to the rib cage there.

"These were the type of situations Wayne Rooney was involved in earlier in his career. That's what Alli's like. Tonight, that [the match] is going to be a massive learning curve for him.

"Situations like that, especially next season with Spurs in the Champions League, foreign referees, he's going to be in situations with people winding him up."

Former Tottenham player Jermaine Jenas told BBC Radio that he didn't think the few incidents summed up Alli as a person.

"I'm mixed with this situation. I don't want to take away from Dele -- he's not a player that gets sent off. Yes, there have been incidents that I would call petulance," Jenas said.

"Yacob does not even flinch. It's the reaction from Dele that worries people and that can have an affect at international level."
