DeAndre Yedlin: No regrets leaving 'unbelievable' Spurs for Sunderland

DeAndre Yedlin has no regrets about swapping a Premier League title challenge with Tottenham for a relegation scrap at Sunderland, but says Spurs have been "unbelievable" this season.

Yedlin, 22, joined Spurs from Seattle Sounders in January 2015, but made just one appearance -- a cameo in a 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa -- before joining Sunderland on a season-long loan deal in the summer.

The USMNT star has made 13 appearances for the Black Cats this season, including nine league starts, and he caught the eye in Sunderland's last match -- the crucial 2-1 win over Manchester United.

But while Sunderland are in the midst of a dogged relegation battle, Yedlin's parent club are two points off the top and eyeing a first league title since 1961.

Nonetheless, the right-back -- whose minutes at White Hart Lane would have likely been restricted by Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier -- is delighted he made the move.

"Things have worked out the way they have, and that's how I'm going to go along with it," Yedlin -- who will hope to retain his place in the Black Cats' starting line-up for Saturday's trip to West Ham -- told the Northern Echo.

"I'm really happy with the way things have worked out because I've enjoyed the lads here, I've enjoyed my game-time here and I'm going to keep pushing.

"Will I be a better player for this experience? Yes, 100 percent. I feel like I've improved immensely in terms of my defending, not only in one-versus-ones but also with my positioning.

"I'm learning from guys like Younes [Kaboul], [John] O'Shea and Wes [Brown], all guys who have been at top teams and been through it all. It's a great experience for me."

Yedlin has been hugely impressed with the progress of his parent club, but his future at Tottenham -- where he will return at the end of the season -- remains uncertain.

However, the Seattle-born player, who has been used mainly on the right wing by national head coach Jurgen Klinsmann, is philosophical about his future.

"They've been unbelievable, especially given the age of their players," he said. "It's such a young team. What Pochettino has done there is incredible, it's definitely a team for the future if all those guys can stay there.

"Will I be a part of that? Honestly, whatever happens, happens. That's kind of how my thought process has always been.

"If my path is with Tottenham then it's with Tottenham. I'm very happy, I'm going to fight and do all I can to help them. If not, then whatever team I'm with, I'm going to fight for them. That's always how my mind has been."

Klinsmann, a Spurs legend, is also delighted that Yedlin opted to join Sunderland, believing the experience will be invaluable for the player's development.

"Obviously every time he gets on the field and gets minutes, it's huge for us," the German told a live Q&A on Facebook.

"We monitor him and talk to him, so hopefully he gets even more minutes in the upcoming weeks. He's very talented obviously but he still knows that he has a way to go and a lot to learn. By talking to him and also to his club coach, we hope that there's a lot more to come in the next couple of months."
