Mauricio Pochettino wants Tottenham to stay focused amid title talk

LONDON -- Tottenham Hotspur coach Mauricio Pochettino is confident his players will continue to do their talking on the pitch, amid growing suggestions that Spurs are serious contenders for the Premier League title.

Tuesday's 3-0 win at Norwich saw Spurs leapfrog rivals Arsenal into third place, five points shy of Premier League leaders Leicester City and two behind Manchester City, who meet at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, before Spurs host Watford.

Pochettino has so far been coy on his side's chances of claiming a maiden Premier League crown and he said his players agree that they must focus on their performances rather than external factors.

"We are in a very good position in the table, the Europa League, the FA Cup. We need to focus on every game. They agree with me we can improve and we have potential to do so. It's important to try to win every game in different competitions but we all agree we need to show more, not speak about it," the Spurs coach told a news conference.

"We need to show we are in a position for fight for different objectives. This is the best way to arrive at the end of the season with the chance to achieve many big things.

"In my experience, it's better to show than speak. When you speak too much only you can expect the worst. In the way we showed from the start is a sign we are in a good way. We work very hard from the beginning, we cannot do something different for the future. We need to keep the same way."

The North London sides' contrasting form has heightened expectations that Spurs can finish above the Gunners for the first time since the 1994-95 season.

Arsenal are the only team in the history of the Premier League that Spurs are yet to finish above but Pochettino is unconcerned about rectifying that statistic this term.

"It's not my principle motivation," Pochettino added. "I can feel it's very important for our supporters, for all people who love Tottenham to be above them. The reality is they're our sworn enemy, you can feel that.

"For me it's important to care about our goals and our objectives, don't think too much about our opponent. We are the most important people, we need to keep our way. It's not important what Arsenal, Manchester City, Leicester or different clubs do."

With Spurs facing Watford at 3 p.m. GMT (10 a.m. ET) on Saturday, Pochettino will have a chance to watch Leicester's match at Man City but he says he will be aiming to enjoy the game, rather than worrying about the result.

He said: "It's important to see the game but focus on our game. It's not important the result if we don't take the three points afterwards. We try to train well, improve and perform as well and give our best to win three points. Then if Leicester versus Man City is a draw, it's not important in this moment, not decisive game to mark our future."
