Hugo Lloris: 'No panic' for Tottenham despite surprise Newcastle defeat

Hugo Lloris has backed Tottenham's young squad to bounce back from a surprise home defeat against Newcastle United to keep fighting for a Premier League top-four finish.

Spurs had gone 14 league games unbeaten before slipping to a 2-1 loss against Newcastle at White Hart Lane on Sunday, with Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez scoring second-half goals for the Magpies following Erik Dier's first-half opener.

Lloris was criticised for Mitrovic's goal and was at fault for the winner as he allowed Perez's half-volley to squeeze underneath him in injury time, but the France No. 1 says Spurs will recover after passing up the chance to leapfrog Manchester United into fourth place.

"It was positive in the dressing room after Newcastle," he told the club's official website. "We had a chat together and tried to understand what happened in the second half.

At half-time [1-0 up] everyone was positive and wanted to win the game but at the end, we didn't respond. I'm not worried about the Newcastle game. It was an opportunity but we missed it.

"There will be other opportunities and the only thing that matters is to be where we want to be at the end of the season -- and the season is still very young.

"There is no panic but we all know we need to get back to winning ways. We demand a lot of effort from each other and we've had a good week to prepare [for Southampton]."

Mauricio Pochettino's side currently sit fifth in the league with 26 points from 16 games, three behind United and nine off table toppers Leicester City.
