Tottenham striker Harry Kane hopes to build on breakout season

Tottenham striker Harry Kane has vowed to build on his breakthrough year in the Premier League and defy the doubters who have suggested he may struggle to better his haul of 31 goals this season.

Kane started the campaign as Tottenham's third-choice striker behind Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado, but he finished as Spurs' shining star and a senior England international.

The 21-year-old striker -- who has been linked with a possible summer move to Manchester United in recent weeks -- accepts he will be under pressure to duplicate his efforts next season.

"It's down to me," Kane told reporters. "I'm a hard worker, I'm always going to try and improve and progress.

"That's all I have to focus on, how I can get better and do even better next season. That's down to me and hopefully we can do better as a team."

Kane has thanked Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino for his success in recent months, with the Argentine tactician backing the young striker to shine ahead of his higher-profile teammates Adebayor and Soldado.

"I owe it all to him," he added. "He showed faith in me at an early stage when a lot of other managers wouldn't have.

"He played me in the Europa League earlier in the season and I did well in it to get my confidence growing.

"I think I had eight or nine goals by the time I got my first start in the Premier League and I was really confident because I was scoring goals.

"So he gave me my chance in the Premier League and I was able to grab the chance with both hands."

Kane equaled the record for the most goals scored in a Premier League season by a Spurs player with the winner against Everton last Sunday, as he joined Tottenham greats Teddy Sheringham, Jurgen Klinsmann and Gareth Bale by 21 goals in a campaign.

Kane is set for a busy summer as he is preparing to join Spurs on their end of season tour of Malaysia and Australia this week, before he links up with the England under-21 squad for the European Championship finals next month.
