Tottenham: Andre Villas-Boas 'tried to rewrite history' with his comments

Tottenham Hotspur have dismissed claims made by former head coach Andre Villas-Boas that he was denied the chance to sign the players he wanted during his time at the club.

Villas-Boas spoke of "promises that were not kept" during his spell at Spurs in an interview with Portuguese TV channel TVI, while accusing the North London side of failing to recruit the transfer targets he had identified.

in comments directed at Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy and sporting director Franco Baldini, the current Zenit St Petersburg boss said he was left with a squad he did not want in his final few months at the club.

"The chairman proposed a challenge to increase Tottenham's competitive level, but immediately [Luka] Modric left and we didn't get any of the targets I had identified, such as Joao Moutinho, Willian, Oscar or Leandro Damiao," Villas-Boas said.

"These were promises that were not kept. I had a group of players I had not chosen. In two years I lost [Rafael] van der Vaart, Modric, [Gareth] Bale, and all the promises made were unfulfilled.

"I gave full support to the football director Franco Baldini. He, meanwhile, had other ambitions, meaning that I ended up with players that did not fit the profile I wanted."

Villas-Boas went on to claim that he was not sacked by Tottenham, but instead chose to leave the club "by mutual agreement" following a 5-0 home defeat against Liverpool last December.

However, a Tottenham spokesman has confirmed to ESPN FC that the club have a different view of events surrounding his time in charge at White Hart Lane.

"It's unfortunate that Andre has felt the need to pass comments like these," the spokesperson said. "Not only has he tried to rewrite history, he has clearly forgotten the facts."
