Toronto FC signs former Barcelona midfielder Victor Vazquez

Toronto FC completed the signing of former Barcelona midfielder Victor Vazquez on Monday.

The MLS club used targeted allocation money to secure the 30-year-old's services from Cruz Azul in Mexico.

"We are excited to bring Victor Vazquez to Toronto FC and provide our team with another experienced midfielder," general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said in a statement. "Victor developed in the Barcelona youth system which is recognized worldwide.

"He is a creative player with experience playing in an attacking midfield role, but also centrally, which gives us flexibility in our system."

Vazquez spent most of his time at Barcelona with the reserve squads but made three appearances for the senior team, scoring once in the Champions League in 2010.

He left Barcelona to move to Belgium with Club Brugge, where he played regularly over five seasons. He was named Belgian Professional Footballer of the Year for the 2014-15 season before moving to Mexico a year later.
