Toronto FC have loaned designated player Gilberto to Vasco da Gama in Brazil, the MLS side announced on Friday.
With the additions of Jozy Altidore and Sebastian Giovinco this offseason, Toronto had four designated players -- one over the MLS limit -- and so needed to unload Gilberto, who signed before last season from Internacional.
The decision to move Gilberto was an easy one as the Brazilian stiker's $1.2 million salary was a fraction of of Toronto's other DPs. Altidore, Giovinco and Michael Bradley will reportedly all make at least $6 million this year.
Terms of Gilberto's loan deal were not disclosed.
"This move was necessary in order for us to be roster and budget compliant for the start of the 2015 season. While necessary it also allows us to gain flexibility and options both today and in the future," general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said in a statement. "We'd like to thank Gilberto for his contributions to Toronto FC and wish him well this season."
Gilberto, 25, scored seven goals in 32 appearances in all competitions in 2014 for Toronto, which missed the playoffs for the eighth consecutive year.
"It's a unique situation," Toronto coach Greg Vanney said last week. "He's taking a look at some different options I think, for himself, as we, along with his representation, work through this process."
Gilberto stayed in Brazil this offseason and did not return to train with Toronto for its preseason camp.
