Uruguay plans to guard against Zika virus for Brazil match

Uruguay say they will take cautions against the Zika virus when they play Brazil next month in World Cup qualifying.

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay -- Uruguay's team director says "we have no qualms" about playing a World Cup qualifier next month in Recife, Brazil, the city at the center of the outbreak of the Zika virus.

Uruguay will face Brazil on March 24 in the northeastern city.

Five nations were fined for fan chants during World Cup qualification games.

FIFA has fined Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay for anti-gay chants by their national team's fans.

FIFA said on its website that the "insulting and discriminatory chants" came during qualifying matches for the 2018 World Cup.

Chile's fine is the biggest at 70,000 Swiss francs ($70,000) over cases at four different matches. The governing body imposed fines of 20,000 Swiss francs ($20,000) on Argentina, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay.

Who did the world's top footballers vote to win the Ballon d'Or? FIFA has revealed the answers.

The captains of FIFA's national teams, their managers and a media member from each country all had a vote.

Argentina, Uruguay to bid together to host 2030 World Cup

Uruguaya President Tabare Vazquez and Argentina President Mauricio Macri met in Uruguay on Thursday.

Argentina and Uruguay will form a joint bid to co-host the 2030 World Cup, the presidents of the two South American countries said on Thursday.

The 2030 event will mark the 100-year anniversary of the first World Cup, hosted Uruguay in 1930. They defeated Argentina 4-2 in the final.

"We have decided that our best opportunity is to jointly nominate ourselves as candidates," Argentina President Mauricio Macri said in a news conference in Uruguay.
