Malaysia lose to Syria, concede late again under new coach Vingada

Jason Dasey and John Wilkinson recap Malaysia's 3-1 win over Myanmar which has them poised to win Group A at the SEA Games.

Malaysia were undone by two goals in the last 10 minutes as they fell to a 2-1 defeat to Syria in an international friendly in Malacca on Tuesday night.

It meant that Nelo Vingada's second game in charge ended in identical fashion to his first on June 13 when they lost by the same score to an under-strength Lebanon in their opening AFC Asian Cup qualifier.

The Harimau Malaya were using the match to prepare for their second Asian Cup qualifying match against Hong Kong on Sep. 5.

Qatar hand South Korea shock defeat; Japan and China waste leads in draws

Japan failed to distance themselves atop Group B as Iraq held the Blue Samurai to a 1-1 draw.

The progress of Japan to the World Cup finals hit a roadblock on Tuesday evening as a second-half goal from Mahdi Kamil earned Iraq a 1-1 draw that leaves Vahid Halilhodzic's side in an ever-tightening battle for an automatic berth at Russia 2018.

Yuya Osako scored eight minutes into the game in Tehran to put the Japanese ahead. But Mahdi's goal for the already-eliminated Iraqis complicates Japan's road to the finals.

Yasuyuki Konno scored midway through the second half Wednesday to give Japan a 1-1 draw with Syria in a friendly.

Japan travels to Tehran to take on Iraq in a Group B qualifier on Tuesday but could be without Dortmund midfielder Shinji Kagawa, who injured his left shoulder 10 minutes into the match at Tokyo Stadium. Kagawa was stretchered off the field and replaced by Shu Kurata.

Syria, who face China next week and still have a chance to qualify for next year's World Cup, took the lead three minutes...
