Ola Toivonen leaving Melbourne Victory, returning home to Europe

Melbourne Victory's star striker Ola Toivonen is set to depart the A-League club, after making the decision to return to Europe with his family.

Toivonen, a Sweden international, had become a fans' favourite since signing with the Victory in 2018, scoring 25 goals from his 40 appearances in navy blue.

But with the growing uncertainty in the world due to COVID-19, the 33-year-old felt "the time was right" to return home.

The city of Malmo has had enough of repeated acts of vandalism on football star Zlatan Ibrahimovic's statue outside the local football club's stadium and is set to move it to a new location, according to media reports.

The Sydsvenskan newspaper said on Saturday that the municipal council in Sweden's third largest city is poised to make a decision on Monday and is seeking suggestions from top-flight team Malmo FF as to where the statue should be moved later in the year.
