Vitaly Mutko has resigned as the head of the Russian Football Union.

Controversial Russian Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Mutko, entangled in allegations of state-sponsored doping, resigned as the head of the country's Football Union on Wednesday.

The announcement followed a string of recent decisions that have rolled back Mutko's formal involvement in Russian sport as the country faced scrutiny over a doping scandal and its role as the 2018 World Cup host.

Aleksandr Kokorin, Pavel Mamaev have custody time extended after hooliganism charge

Alexander Kokorin was detained as a suspect in a criminal probe over hooliganism following an unprovoked attack on two government officials.

A court in Moscow has ordered that Russia internationals Aleksandr Kokorin and Pavel Mamaev must be remanded in custody until Feb. 8 after they were charged with hooliganism over two violent attacks in Moscow in October.

Zenit St Petersburg forward Kokorin and Krasnodar midfielder Mamaev could face jail over the attacks, which were captured on CCTV on Oct. 8. They were orginally to have been held in custody until Dec. 8.

Russia prevented World Cup drone terror attacks - security chief

Gianni Infantino believes Russia 2018 is the benchmark for Qatar to live up to at the 2022 World Cup.

Russia has said it thwarted attempted drone attacks and attacks on supporters by groups of ultras at the World Cup.

Alexander Bortnikov, the head of Russia's Federal Security Service, said officers "took measures to detect and foil attempts by terrorists to use drones during the preparation and hosting of various major political and sports events, most of all during the soccer World Cup."

Bortnikov offered no further details in his comments, which were reported by Russia's Tass state news agency.
