Stoke City have sounded out Republic of Ireland boss Martin O'Neill over the club's vacant manager's job, sources close to the club have told ESPN FC.

Stoke are searching for a new manager following Mark Hughes' sacking in the wake of their FA Cup exit at the hands of League Two Coventry City on Saturday.

Hughes was axed after four-and-a-half years in charge of Stoke following a dreadful run of form which has left the club in a survival fight this season.

France to host Republic of Ireland in May 28 friendly

ESPN's Julien Laurens believes France will be very happy after drawing Australia, Peru and Denmark.

PARIS -- France will host the Republic of Ireland at the Stade de France on May 28 as part of their World Cup warmup program.

The French Football Federation made the announcement on Friday.

European Championship runners-up France also have friendlies at home with Colombia, Italy, and the United States and away to World Cup host Russia on March 27.

France open their World Cup campaign against Australia on June 16 in Kazan.

Republic of Ireland defender Cyrus Christie has called on the football community to "stand up'' to racism after revealing he has been a target on social media.

Christie was subjected to abuse on Twitter after scoring an own-goal during the World Cup playoff defeat by Denmark, with the Football Association of Ireland reporting his treatment to the Gardai.

The Coventry-born player was allegedly told by one user to go and play for Jamaica, with other references to lynching the 25-year-old.

Denmark manager Age Hareide thanked Republic of Ireland for giving his side, and in particular matchwinner Christian Eriksen, the space within which to thrive.
