The reign of Akbar Nawas as Global-Cebu head coach got off to a dramatic start, with the Singaporean guiding the Philippines' outfit to victory on penalties over Geylang International in the Singapore Cup on Wednesday night.

Global prevailed 3-2 on spot kicks after a thrilling 4-4 draw over 120 minutes in a preliminary-round clash at Jalan Besar Stadium.

Akbar is a former Tampines Rovers coach who first joined Global as a technical consultant last month for their AFC Cup campaign.

Former Tampines Rovers head coach Akbar Nawas has landed a dream assignment in charge of Philippines club Global-Cebu, just a month after a short-term gig as technical consultant.

And one of the 41-year-old's first duties is to knock out Geylang International from the Singapore Cup, with Global facing the S.League outfit in the preliminary round of the domestic competition at Jalan Besar on Tuesday night.

The 2017 Singapore Cup has invited two teams from Philippines, and two from Cambodia.

Penang hope the signing of Philippines international forward Mark Hartmann will boost their chances of avoiding relegation from the Malaysia Super League (MSL).

The 25-year-old moves to the island state from Sarawak where his contract was terminated, despite scoring seven goals in 15 matches in the 2017 season.
