United States' Copa Centenario a turning point for CONCACAF's World Cup teams

Brazil legend Pele feels Tite will have challenging few months ahead of him in terms of assembling the best XI as the Selecao aim to reach the World Cup final.
Neymar gave a 7-year-old fan the surprise of a lifetime on Steve Harvey's talk show with a heartfelt message and signed Brazil jersey.
Luiz Felipe Scolari who led Brazil to a World Cup win in 2002 thinks Selecao should not focus on individuals ahead of this year's World Cup.

As the World Cup looms closer, a growing level of frustration in the United States soccer community would be understandable. But even though the U.S. national team will not be in Russia, the country can take some comfort from the role it played in shaping the road to the World Cup, especially as far as the South American teams are concerned.

Nowadays the Copa America is played every four years, kicking off a new cycle of competitive action. In the year after the World Cup there has been nothing...

Gareca, Peru waiting on Guerrero as World Cup prep continues

With 100 days to go until the FIFA World Cup, Ian Darke joins a group of ESPN writers and experts for a roundtable discussion about what to expect in Russia this summer.

NOTE: This has been translated from an original piece on ESPN Argentina.

Peru is experiencing a great moment. The national team is returning to the World Cup after a 36-year absence -- their last World Cup was Spain, 1982 -- and hopes are growing for a good performance. Ricardo Gareca, the Argentine coach who managed this feat, is aiming to survive a tough group in which France are the favorites.

The great news for Peru is that they'll be able to count on Paolo Guerrero, the key player and mentor...

Flamengo won't pay Peru striker Paolo Guerrero during suspension

Paolo Guerrero had a one-year ban reduced to six months in December.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Peru striker Paolo Guerrero won't be paid by Flamengo due to a six-month doping suspension imposed by FIFA.

The club's legal director said Sunday that Guerrero agrees with the decision not to be paid until he returns to play.

"We are only doing what the contract says," director Flavio Wileman told website "Ser Flamengo" this weekend.

Guerrero has been suspended since Nov. 3. His defense still hopes to get the suspension fully annulled.

Guerrero will still be eligible for the World...

Former Peru FA president Manuel Burga, left, was acquitted in the FIFA briber scandal on Tuesday.

NEW YORK -- A former South American football official was acquitted in the FIFA bribery scandal on Tuesday and walked out of the courtroom saying he's finished with the world's most popular sport.

The verdict clearing Manuel Burga, former president of Peru's football federation, of a single racketeering conspiracy charge came days after prosecutors won guilty verdicts on multiple charges against two other former officials.

"God bless America. That's all I can say," the 60-year-old Burga said with...

Jose Maria Marin has been found guilty of corruption charges in the FIFA bribery scandal.

Two former South American football officials were convicted on Friday of corruption charges at a U.S. trial stemming from the FIFA bribery scandal, while deliberations will continue next week for a third official.

Jose Maria Marin, of Brazil, and Juan Angel Napout, of Paraguay, were convicted of the top count they faced, racketeering conspiracy, after being found to have accepted bribes. Jurors were undecided on Manuel Burga, the former president of Peru's football federation.

The three had been...
