Deadline looms for Nigeria amid threat of ban from FIFA

Nigeria have been given until Friday to avoid a "lengthy suspension" from football, FIFA has warned.

After months of uncertainty, Amaju Pinnick was elected as president of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) on Sept. 30, with FIFA confirming its recognition of the elections on Oct. 2.

However, a group led by Chris Giwa has taken the matter to court -- despite statutes forbidding football issues to be deliberated in a civil court -- as he alleges he was elected NFF president on Aug. 26.

Why Stephen Keshi had to go as Nigeria head coach

Stephen Keshi guided Nigeria to the second round of the World Cup, but is now out of a job.
Stephen Keshi guided Nigeria to the second round of the World Cup, but is now out of a job.

It was always going to happen. Stephen Keshi's forced departure as Nigeria coach had always been a matter of when, not if.

As a matter of fact, were it not for the crisis which engulfed the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) immediately post-World Cup, where the body was split in two leading to a FIFA ban that was later lifted, the former Super Eagles captain would have been relieved of his job way earlier.

Stephen Keshi sacked as coach of Nigeria despite Sudan victory

Stephen Keshi led Nigeria to their first African Nations Cup triumph in 19 years.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has axed Stephen Keshi from his role as Nigeria coach.

Keshi, a former Super Eagles international, took charge of the team in 2011 and went on to lead them to African Nations Cup glory in 2013 and to qualification for the 2014 World Cup.

The NFF announced its decision on Thursday, just a day after Nigeria's 3-1 African Nations Cup qualifying victory over Sudan.

Despite the win, the Super Eagles sit third in Group A following defeats to Congo, Sudan and a goalless...

Nigeria looking for answers after African Nations Cup loss to Sudan

Nigeria's John Obi Mikel, left, defends Sudan's Muhannad El Tahir on Saturday. Sudan defeated Nigeria 1-0.

The juxtaposition of the words in the expression, "The King is dead, long live the King," can come across macabre on first hearing. The first half of the phrase is about the end of a life, the second about the extension of another. It is only when you realise two different lives are being discussed that the lines unblur and succession becomes the real subject under scrutiny. After this weekend, that is what Nigerian football will be thinking about.

Nigeria handed another defeat in African Nations Cup qualifying

Nigeria's John Obi Mikel, left, defends against Sudan's Muhannad El Tahir on Saturday. Sudan defeated Nigeria 1-0.

African champions Nigeria slumped to a 1-0 defeat in Sudan and are bottom of Group A with just one point from three games in African Nations Cup qualifying.

The setback was inflicted by Bakri Almadina's goal and increases the pressure on Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi.

Meanwhile, South Africa moved to the top of the group after a 2-0 win at previous leaders Congo. Two goals in three minutes just after halftime, from Bongani Ndulula and Tokelo Rantie, earned victory for Bafana Bafana.

The top two...
