Nigeria victory is a stepping stone to World Cup - Refiloe Jane

South Africa's opening Africa Women Cup of Nations victory over Nigeria should set the tone for Banyana Banyana to qualify for the World Cup, according to Refiloe Jane.

The 2018 COSAFA champions defeated the Super Falcons for the first time at the Cape Coast Stadium on Sunday, courtesy of Chrestina Kgatlana's 84th-minute stunner.

Jane, who was instrumental in the build-up to the goal, believes that the opening victory should set Banyana on their way to a top-three finish.

Nigeria still AWCON favourites, but face tougher task than normal

Only seven countries, headlined by the USA and Germany, have been to every FIFA Women's World Cup since its inception in 1991, and Nigeria is a member of that rarefied company.

But the Super Falcons are the only member of that elite group yet to qualify for the 2019 edition in France. And by the looks of it, this will be the least straightforward of their journeys to reach the showpiece tournament.

Three countries will qualify from Africa in the coming weeks, namely the three top finishers...

Improved performance key to Falconets progression

Nigeria's persistence in their final Group D clash against China on Monday sealed their spot in Women's Under-20 World Cup in France.

The Falconets, trailing their Chinese opponents, were seconds from being eliminated from the tournament, but thanks to a huge slice of luck -- an own-goal from Jiaxing Dou -- set up a last eight clash against Spain.

While the Nigerians struggled in their three group fixtures, scoring just two goals, Spain had no such problems, finishing top of a strong Group D ahead...

Nigeria's Africa Women Cup of Nations win shows interest is on the up

Nigeria's Africa Women Cup of Nations win
Nigeria won the Africa Women Cup of Nations for an eighth time after a 1-0 win over hosts Cameroon.

Nigeria's women claimed their eighth African Nations Cup title with a 1-0 win over Cameroon over the weekend.

Here are five thoughts from the tournament:

1. Omagbemi, Ellis point the way forward for women

Florence Omagbemi became only the second woman to lead a team to victory in 10 editions of the African Women Nations Cup. The first to do so was her compatriot and former teammate Uche Eucharia in 2010.

Omagbemi and South Africa's Desiree Ellis may have been the only two women coaches out of the...

Nigeria claim women's African Nations Cup for 10th time in 12 tournaments

Nigeria are the defending AWCON champions, having won the title in 2016.
Nigeria were again crowned African Nations Cup champions on Saturday.

YAOUNDE, Cameroon -- Nigeria scored late to deny Cameroon a home triumph and extend their dominance of the women's African Nations Cup with a 1-0 win in the final on Saturday.

Desire Oparanozie's 84th-minute goal gave defending champions Nigeria their 10th title in 12 tournaments. Only Equatorial Guinea in 2008 and 2012 have managed to wrestle the African crown away from the Nigerian women in the past 25 years.

Cameroon came into this final bristling with confidence after winning all of their group...
