President George Weah announces salary cut in light of Liberian economic situation

Newly elected Liberia president George Weah has revealed that he will take a 25-percent pay cut as the nation's economic standing continues to decline.

Former footballer and Ballon d'Or winner Weah was sworn in as Liberia president, replacing Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, on January 22 after winning last month's election.

On Monday, the 51-year-old revealed in a nationwide address that he was to accept a lower salary as Liberia's own financial situation deteriorates.

George Weah sworn in as Liberian president

Former World Player of the Year George Weah was on Monday sworn in as Liberia's president in front of a packed crowd at the Samuel K. Doe Stadium in Monrovia, and immediately promised to continue the fight against corruption.

George Weah's 'unbelievable' life would make a fantastic film - Arsene Wenger

Arsene Wenger has compared George Weah's life to a film script after his former Monaco player was elected president of Liberia.

Wenger has been invited to Weah's inauguration on Jan. 22 but joked that he expected to be too busy to attend unless a Football Association charge sees him suspended from his day job.

The Arsenal boss signed Weah for Monaco in 1988, guiding his career for the next four years, and views the 1995 FIFA world player of the year as a shining example to the rest of the game.

The result was confirmed by the country's election commission chair, Jerome Korkoyah, on Thursday.

The ex-African Footballer of the Year, who enjoyed a glittering career with the likes of Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan, won 12 of the 15 counties in the West African country.

Weah, 51, beat Joseph Boakai, who has been vice-president for the past...

George Weah and the ease of leadership

As George Oppong Weah prepares to transition from football player to president, there will be many stories told and written of his ascent to the highest office in his country. Few will capture the essence of the man. Still, we will try.

In May 2001, Nigeria's Super Eagles squared up against Liberia in a pivotal 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Port Harcourt. Leading the Lone Star charge was 1995 FIFA World Player of the Year George Weah, whose sheer force of football talent and financial will was...
