Italy fall to familiar foe Spain at U21 Euros but there is hope for the future

England fans weren't the only ones to feel like they've been here before as they watched their team bow out of the Under-21 European Championship on penalties to Germany. Italy's U21s also saw an all too familiar and unwelcome story unfold before their eyes when they lost 3-1 to Spain later on Tuesday evening.

Ever since the Euro 2008 quarterfinal in Vienna, Italy have had to get used to losing to Spain over the past decade. Last summer's 2-0 win in the round-of-16 at Euro 2016 was the exception...

For more than a half, the game looked little like the high-scoring 2013 final between the two that Spain won 4-2 to win the trophy for the fourth time.

With clear chances at goal missing, Spain looked...

Robert Fico wants an investigation after the Italy-Germany result.

The prime minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, has called on UEFA to investigate his country's elimination at the group stage of the European Under-21 Championship.

His call came after Italy beat Germany 1-0 -- the only result that could have sent both teams through.

Both Italy and Germany have denied that there was any collusion, but Fico has written to UEFA and said: "I believe that you will have the whole issue investigated and UEFA will make rules for the next tournament which will give precedence...

Will England shake their inferiority complex? Can Asensio be stopped?

With the semifinals of the European Under-21 Championship set to kick off on Tuesday, Nick Miller highlights the stories to keep an eye on as England, Germany, Spain and Italy look to book a place in Friday's final in Krakow.

Can England shake their inferiority complex?

Of course it doesn't mean anything in reality, but it does raise a smile that England's European Under-21 Championship semifinal against Germany will take place a year to the day after the senior side were humiliated by Iceland....
