Despite Michael Essien scoring his first goal in Indonesia on Saturday night, Persib Bandung were disappointed to drop two points after being held to a 2-2 draw at PS TNI in the second week of Indonesia's Liga 1.

It means that the 2015 champions are winless after two rounds, despite a massive preseason spending spree to beef up their squad.

The Indonesian careers of Michael Essien and Carlton Cole have hit an early obstacle as Persib Bandung take on PS TNI for the second game of the Liga 1 season on Saturday without their two high-profile imports.

The former English Premier League stars made their debuts on April 15 in a goalless draw at home to Arema, amid great fanfare and international interest. But their hopes of helping Persib pick up a first win of 2017 have been dashed due to red tape.

Malaysia lead Singapore, both rise four spots in latest FIFA rankings

Malaysia stayed two rungs above Singapore in the latest FIFA rankings as both nations climbed up.

Singapore moved up four spots in the latest FIFA rankings, but failed to bridge the gap on neigbours Malaysia, who rose by the same margin.

On back of their 0-0 draw away to Bahrain in AFC Asian Cup qualifying, Singapore went from 163rd to 159th. At the same time, Malaysia climbed to 157th after being 161st in March.

However, both nations are well below their average position since the FIFA rankings began, with Singapore currently 43 spots worse off than their 120th and Malaysia 37 runs inferior...

Ex-Chelsea star Michael Essien signs for Indonesian club Persib Bandung

Michael Essien has played for some of Europe's biggest clubs like Chelsea, Real Madrid and AC Milan.

Former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien has signed for Persib Bandung to play in the Indonesia Liga 1 this season.

Having made his last professional appearance for Panathinaikos in Greece, Essien's arrival has given Persib Bandung a huge boost ahead of their 2017 campaign.

The ex-Ghana international will be the highest-paid player in Indonesian football, with a contract reportedly worth 800,000 euros a year.

Essien, 34, has been given the No. 5 jersey and is expected to help the club challenge...

Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia unmoved in latest FIFA rankings

Thailand moved within four spots of being the highest-ranked nation in Southeast Asia, as almost all countries including Malaysia and Singapore remain unmoved in the latest FIFA rankings.

Kiatisuk Senamuang's 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup-winning side remained in 126th place, four rungs behind the tournament co-hosts Philippines, who failed to make the tournament's semifinals.

Malaysia and Singapore, who also crashed out in the group stages, remained in 161st and 165th, respectively.

Vietnam fell two spots...
