Chile join Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay in 2030 World Cup bid

Chile joined three neighboring South American countries in a bid to host the 2030 soccer World Cup, according to a joint statement from their governments released on Thursday.

The bid, which previously included only Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, is up against bids from England, and another bid from Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia.

The 2030 World Cup will mark the centennial of soccer's most important championship, with the first being held in Uruguay in 1930.

The Portland Timbers' pursuit of a Designated Player forward has led them to Tigres' Eduardo Vargas, league sources have confirmed to ESPN FC.

Univision Deportes was the first to report Portland's interest in Vargas. Portland declined to comment on the story.

Liga MX's Club America signs Chilean striker Nicolas Castillo

Club America has signed Chile international Nicolas Castillo, the team announced on Thursday. 

The former Pumas UNAM striker provides the defending Liga MX champions an immediate boost in attack. The club has suffered departures and injuries during the first several weeks of the Clausura 2019.

The U.S. men's national team will play Chile in an exhibition on March 26 at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston.

The game announced Thursday is likely to follow a home friendly on March 22. The two matches would be the first time new U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter has his full player pool available.
