Matildas' Emily van Egmond sidelined with ankle injury

Australia destroyed Brazil to win the inaugural Tournament of Nations.
Australia and Newcastle midfielder Emily van Egmond could be out for six weeks.

Matildas linchpin Emily van Egmond has been put on ice for the remainder of the W-League season after an ankle injury. The Newcastle captain rolled and sprained her ankle on Wednesday at training, suffering ligament damage.

The injury is terrible news for the eighth-placed Jets ahead of Saturday's must-win match against Sam Kerr's visiting Perth. And it's not great either for the national team with June's World Cup on the horizon.

The midfielder is predicted to be out for six weeks. That suggested...

Sydney FC change tack, broaden search to bolster striker corps

New Sydney FC signing Anthony Caceres speaks on why the Sky Blues are a perfect fit for him.

Sydney FC have pivoted in their hunt for a speedy striker, with coach Steve Corica now keeping his options open to sign a target man during the transfer window.

Corica has been outspoken about the need to replace the pace of injured attacker Trent Buhagiar, who looked set for a breakout campaign before tearing his ACL in October. Ahead of Friday's A-League clash against Central Coast, Corica announced the club has now broadened its search.

"I said if we can find the right player with speed, yes,"...

Australia to host Argentina, South Korea, New Zealand in Women's World Cup warm-up tournament

Matildas' head coach Alen Stajcic believes the Women's World Cup is one of the most open it has been with a number of teams having a good chance of winning the tournament.

Matildas coach Alen Stajcic has described the inaugural Cup of Nations as the "perfect" preparation for next year's World Cup.

The Matildas will meet Argentina, South Korea and New Zealand on home soil in late February as part of their build-up to France.

The mini-tournament will feature three double-headers at Jubilee Stadium in Sydney, Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane and AAMI Park in Melbourne.

"For me it's perfect -- different styles of play," Stajcic said on Tuesday.

It is a major piece of the puzzle...

Perth Glory hopeful of Matthew Spiranovic's swift return from injury

Perth Glory coach Tony Popovic is hopeful former Socceroos defender Matthew Spiranovic will miss only one week with a hamstring injury.

Spiranovic was injured after just 31 minutes of last week's 1-0 A-League win over Melbourne City, but scans have cleared him of any tear. The 30-year-old resumed running duties on Wednesday and could return to the senior side for next week's home clash with Sydney FC.

"[The scans showed] there was some fluid there, just a little bit, which we've seen previously with...

Canberra A-League bid remains optimistic

Canberra appears to be the frontrunner to secure the next A-League license.

A bid from the nation's capital missed out to new teams in Melbourne and Sydney, but the ACT soccer community remains highly optimistic. Canberra was the only unsuccessful bid singled out by the FFA when announcing its expansion plans on Thursday.

"[We] continue to view Canberra as an attractive opportunity for potential future expansion," FFA chairman Chris Nikou said.

Canberra bid leader Michael Caggiano is taking significant...
