Amunike names first Tanzania squad ahead of AFCON qualifiers

New Tanzania head coach Emmanuel Amunike has named a 25-man squad ahead of the Taifa Stars' crucial 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier away to Uganda on September 8.

The East Africans started their Group L campaign with a 1-1 home draw against Lesotho, and will be eager to make amends away in Uganda.

"The technical team has named a 25-man squad which is expected to start training new week," Wallace Karia, the President of the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) told KweséESPN on Tuesday.

Top striker Mbwana Samatta, who plays for Belgian side Genk, and Al-Hilal forward Thomas Ulimwengu are the squad's biggest names, while Amunike has has also included senior players Shamari Kapombe, Kelvin Yondani, Aggrey Morris, Erasto Nyoni and Saimon Msuva.

Amunike, one of Nigeria's greatest players, was appointed as the new Tanzania coach earlier this month on a three-year contract. He will be assisted by Hemed Morocco and Emeka Amadi.

After battling arch-rivals Uganda next month, Amunike will prepare his team for their third qualifier away in Cape Verde.

Uganda Cranes are top of Group L after their 1-0 win away to Cape Verde last year.
