Sydney FC defender Alex Wilkinson signs for two more years

Sydney FC have re-signed defensive linchpin Alex Wilkinson for two more seasons.

Wilkinson was an almost ever-present member of Sydney's A-League side in 2017-18, being rested for just one match late in the season.

The 33-year-old former Australia international centre-back was a pivotal part of the record-breaking Sky Blues sides that won the 2017 title and 2018 Premiers Plate, and captained the side in the absence of Alex Brosque.

His presence at the heart of the defence will provide continuity as the club looks to replace coach Graham Arnold, who will take over the Socceroos job after the forthcoming World Cup.

"There's a great journey ahead of us in the next couple of years," Wilkinson said.

"We've got the majority of our squad sticking together and I want to be a part of the title successes to come."

Sydney FC general manager of football Terry McFlynn described Wilkinson as an invaluable member of the squad.

"Alex is one of our leaders and has been part of the backbone of the team during the success of the last two seasons," he said.

"It's a major boost to have him on board for another two seasons."
