Gokhan Inler misses out on Switzerland's Euro 2016 squad

Leicester City midfielder Gokhan Inler has been left out of Switzerland's provisional squad for Euro 2016.

Inler, 31, signed for Leicester from Napoli last summer but made just five Premier League appearances as the club lifted the title.

He has 89 caps to his name and captained the Swiss at the 2014 World Cup, but he has not been selected by Vladimir Petkovic for this summer's tournament in France.

Petkovic said he is "sincerely sorry" for discarding a "big player, a big personality."

Arsenal transfer target Granit Xhaka is among the 28-man list, which will be reduced to 23 by May 31 in accordance with UEFA's deadline.

The head coach gave a first call-up to 19-year-old Denis Zakaria, who plays a holding midfielder role for Young Boys.

Switzerland, who finished second in qualifying Group E behind England, face France, Romania and Albania in Group A in France.

The Swiss have warm-up matches against Belgium in Geneva on May 28, and Moldova in Lugano on June 3.
