Switzerland add Xherdan Shaqiri to squad despite thigh injury

Switzerland included Xherdan Shaqiri in their squad on Friday to face Estonia and the United States despite the Inter Milan playmaker injuring a thigh muscle.

Coach Vladimir Petkovic included Shaqiri in a 23-player squad for two home matches this month.

Switzerland host Estonia in a European Championship qualifier at Lucerne next Friday, and the U.S. in a friendly at Zurich four days later.

Defenders Fabian Lustenberger and Silvan Widmer, and midfielder Granit Xhaka all return from injury to an experienced squad. Only backup goalkeeper Marwin Hitz has never played for the national team.

Switzerland are third in a six-team Euro 2016 qualifying group, trailing six points behind leaders England. The top two advance to the finals in France, and third place earns at least a playoff.
