Sunderland's Vito Mannone sent to hospital for scans on elbow injury

Sunderland are sweating on the fitness of Vito Mannone after the goalkeeper was sent to hospital for X-rays on an elbow injury.

Mannone, 28, sustained the problem in training and joins the Black Cats' growing injury list, which also includes John O'Shea, Billy Jones, Lamine Kone, Lee Cattermole, Jan Kirchhoff, Sebastian Larsson and Fabio Borini.

"He's been taken to hospital to have his elbow checked," Sunderland manager David Moyes told a news conference. "We do not yet know if it is serious but it could be a fracture."

Jordan Pickford will start Sunderland's EFL Cup second-round clash with Shrewsbury on Wednesday, although the England under-21 international was set to have been given the nod before Mannone picked up his injury.

"I would have played Pickford anyway tomorrow night. I have no qualms about him," Moyes added. "He could easily have started as No. 1. There is tough competition for the goalkeeping spot.

"I am still getting to know them but I saw Jordan play [on loan] for Preston quite a bit and was impressed just as everyone else was impressed."

Information from the Press Association was used in this report.
