D.C. United star Luciano Acosta not making move to PSG - sources

D.C. United midfielder Luciano Acosta will not join Paris Saint-Germain in January, a source has confirmed to ESPN FC.

PSG boss Thomas Tuchel had demanded attacking reinforcement to cover Neymar's injury absence and ESPN FC reported earlier on Thursday that the United playmaker was set to join the Parc de Princes side. However that will no longer be the case, sources have confirmed.

According to a source, PSG had agreed the move in principle with D.C. United with an offer of less than €10 million, and agreed to meet the player's personal terms.

The source added that Acosta had left D.C. United's training camp and was scheduled to arrive in Paris on Thursday for his medical ahead of the transfer deadline.

The 24-year-old, who started his career with Boca Juniors, was part of the 2018 MLS best XI and struck up a rapport with designated player Wayne Rooney, who helped to spark a turnaround in fortunes for Ben Olsen's men after his midseason arrival.

Despite concerns over his diminutive build with Ligue 1 a competition known for its physicality, the source indicated that Tuchel and his staff had given their blessing to the move for the Argentine, which was seen as a cost-effective way of filling the gap created by Neymar's recent injury as efforts continue to land another defensive midfielder.

PSG are a provisional 13 points clear at the top of Ligue 1 with one or two games in hand over most other teams, and travel to semi-professional Villefranche-Beaujolais in the Coupe de France round of 16 next week, which could be a debut opportunity for Acosta.

Later on Thursday, the club announced they sold midfielder Yacine Adli to Bordeaux, who joined the French side on a four-and-a-half-year contract.

The 18-year-old Adli grew up in the Val-de-Marne region of Paris and signed his first professional contract with PSG last summer.

He made one league appearance for PSG in the final game of last season.
