Tottenham to extend Erik Lamela's contract by further year - sources

Tottenham Hotspur will active an option to extend Erik Lamela's contract by a year, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2020, sources have told ESPN FC.

Lamela's current deal -- agreed when he joined from Roma in August 2013 -- is due to expire next summer.

He signed a four-year contract worth around £65,000 a week with the option of two additional years when he joined Spurs, and the deal has now effectively become a four-plus-two-plus-one.

Tottenham's move will alleviate doubts about Lamela's future after his impressive return from a 13-month injury absence, ensuring he does not begin next season in the final year of his contract.

Lamela was sidelined from October 2016 until November 2017 with chronic hip problems but has made 28 appearances since returning to fitness.

The 26-year-old former River Plate player has been linked with a return to Italy, while there were reports of interest from other Premier League clubs in January.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has trusted his Argentine compatriot to start big games, including Saturday's defeat to Manchester City at Wembley, ahead of Son Heung-Min.

Lamela was on the bench for the 1-1 draw at Brighton on Tuesday and is in contention to start the FA Cup semifinal against Manchester United on Saturday.
