Hannover sign U.S. youth defender Chris Gloster

Chris Gloster, left, started for the U.S. at the Under-17 World Cup.
Chris Gloster will initially play for the under-19s.

Hannover became the latest Bundesliga club to add a U.S. youth international by signing 17-year-old defender Chris Gloster on Tuesday.

Gloster, who previously had a trial with Schalke, will move to Germany next season after coming through the New York Red Bulls academy.

The left-back started for the U.S. at the Under-17 World Cup last year and will initially play for Hannover's under-19s side.

"We expect a lot from him, also with a view to the senior team," Michael Tarnat, the head of Hannover's academy, told the club's website. "He made a good impression during his two-week trial here."

Should Gloster make his debut for Hannover's senior squad he would become the first American at the club since Steven Cherundolo, who made 370 league appearances between 1999 and 2014.

Gloster is the third U.S. youngster to move to a Bundesliga club in 2018. In February, striker Josh Sargent signed his first contract with Werder Bremen, while Zyen Jones, a product of Atlanta United's academy, joined Schalke.

The trio add to the new wave of U.S. hopefuls in the Bundesliga, a trend started by Borussia Dortmund's Christian Pulisic and continued by Schalke midfielder Weston McKennie.

The list of American youngsters in Germany also includes Jonathan Klinsmann at Hertha Berlin, Nick Taitague at Schalke and Haji Wright, currently on loan from the Royal Blues at second-tier Sandhausen.
