Manchester United's James Wilson joins Sheffield United on loan

ESPN FC's Steve Nicol goes player-by-player to determine who should remain and who should depart Manchester United's back line.

Manchester United striker James Wilson has joined Sheffield United on loan for the rest of the season.

Wilson, 22, scored twice on his first-team debut in May 2014, but has not played for the senior team for more than two years.

His last appearance was in a League Cup tie with Middlesbrough under Louis van Gaal in October 2015.

Wilson has been a regular scorer for Ricky Sbragia's under-23s this season, and although he was included in the Jose Mourinho's Champions League squad in August, he is not considered part of the manager's plans.

He was not called up to the first-team squad despite injuries to both Romelu Lukaku and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in December and is not part of the group currently training in Dubai.

Wilson, who has scored four goals in 20 games for United, has had previous loan spells at Brighton and Derby.

The former England U21 international, who has got 18 months left on his contract at Old Trafford, was due to spend last season on loan at Derby but returned in October after suffering a knee ligament injury in training.

He will move to Sheffield United until the end of the season and could make his debut against Sheffield Wednesday on Friday.

Manager Chris Wilder said: "James has a fantastic pedigree having come through the ranks at Manchester United and importantly has some good Championship experience.

"He says he is raring to go and is the fittest he has ever been, so couple that with his undoubted ability and desire to impress, than I'm sure he will improve the group."
