D.C. United signs David Ousted to deal after Whitecaps trade
D.C. United has signed goalkeeper David Ousted to a two-year contract after completing a trade with the Vancouver Whitecaps, the teams announced on Monday.
The deal will see Vancouver receive D.C.'s second round pick in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft next week.
Sources told ESPN FC the contract signed by Ousted, 32, will pay him just under the designated player threshold, which this season will be around $500,000, meaning D.C. United won't need to use any targeted allocation money (TAM). There is also a club option for a third year.
The Denmark native has been vocal on social media about his contract, contending that a potential deal that would have sent him to the LA Galaxy was nixed because league rules prevented the Galaxy from using TAM to buy down his $600,000 per year option.
The Galaxy have since acquired the rights to David Bingham, allowing D.C. to move for Ousted.
Over the course of five seasons with Vancouver, Ousted was a consistent presence in the starting lineup, making 144 league and playoff appearances. But he was deemed expendable by the Whitecaps at the end of the campaign, having lost his starting job to Stefan Marinovic.
Vancouver subsequently traded for former LA Galaxy keeper Brian Rowe. With Bill Hamid having moved to Danish side FC Midtjylland, Ousted will compete with Steve Clark for the starting goalkeeper spot.
Ousted joined Vancouver in 2013 from Danish side Randers. He previously spent time with SonderjyskE, Hellerup IK, and Brondby. He also spent time on loan with lower-tier sides Akademisk Boldklub and Nykobing FC.
Also on Monday, Vancouver announced that defender Sam Adekugbe has completed a transfer to Norwegian club Valerenga, after the homegrown player made 23 appearances in all competitions over five years.
Adekugbe, a Canada international, had previously spent time on loan with Brighton and Hove Albion in England and IFK Goteborg in Sweden.
