Australia keeper Mitch Langerak joins Levante from VfB Stuttgart

Mitch Langerak, 29, was key to Stuttgart's promotion to the Bundesliga at the end of last season.

Australia international Mitch Langerak has left VfB Stuttgart and joined Levante after dropping down the pecking order at the German club following the arrival of Ron-Robert Zieler.

Langerak, 29, had been Stuttgart's keeper as they returned to Bundesliga just one year after their shock relegation in 2016.

But with former Germany international Zieler returning to Bundesliga following a year-long stint as Kasper Schmeichel's backup at Leicester, the former BVB shot stopper felt it was time to move on.

On Wednesday, Langerak completed his €800,000 move to Levante, where he signed a two-year contract.

"Mitch made an outstanding contribution towards our return to Bundesliga," Stuttgart's new sporting executive Michael Reschke said on the club's official homepage.

"Understandably, he had his problems with his role as the backup keeper. We agreed to this move only because of [this] explicit wish [to play]."

Langerak, who made 21 Bundesliga appearances for BVB and Stuttgart, the club he joined in 2015, leaves Germany after seven years and two Bundesliga titles and one DFB-Pokal with Jurgen Klopp's Borussia Dortmund.
