Leicester agree deal to sign Chester defender Sam Hughes - sources

Leicester City have beaten a number of clubs to the signing of non-league defender Sam Hughes, sources close to the Premier League side have told ESPN FC.

Several Premier League and Championship clubs including Swansea City, Crystal Palace, Sheffield Wednesday, Wolves and Barnsley have been tracking Chester centre-back Hughes, but Leicester have moved to agree a deal.

Leicester have offered the 20-year-old a three-year contract at the King Power Stadium and he is initially set to link up with the under-23 squad, with a view to challenging for a place in the first team in the near future.

Hughes is regarded as one of the best young prospects in the lower leagues and scouts have been monitoring his progress for several months.

Hughes is out of contract at Chester, but as he is under 24 they will be due compensation from Leicester for his signature. The Premier League club are trying to agree a fee with Chester to prevent the deal going to a tribunal.
