Man United's David De Gea at one of the 'biggest clubs' - Victor Valdes

Victor Valdes has told David De Gea he is already at one football's three greatest clubs and is the envy of players across the planet because he is at Manchester United.

Manager Louis van Gaal admitted that, after offering him a lucrative new contract, he could be powerless to persuade De Gea to stay at Old Trafford as it looks likelier he will join Real Madrid.

And former Barcelona goalkeeper Valdes is in no doubt that United rank alongside his old employers at the top of the football pecking order.

"Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United are three of the biggest clubs in the world," Valdes said. "Everyone in the world wants to play for these clubs.

"It's a question you would have to put to David. I cannot answer for him. I don't know [if he is leaving].''

Valdes, who joined United on an 18-month deal in January after training with them, is a potential replacement for De Gea in goal at Old Trafford.

And he added: "I am very happy to be here. I have one more year on my contract here. Let's see what happens."

The 33-year-old, who won the Champions League three times during his Barcelona career, made a belated debut for United in Sunday's 1-1 draw with Arsenal when he came on for the injured De Gea.

"It felt very good," Valdes said. "It all went very quick. David asked to come off very quickly and the next thing I knew I was on the pitch. It was a great feeling to be on the pitch at Old Trafford, the fans welcomed me very well and for that reason I am happy."

Valdes conceded Arsenal's equaliser when Theo Walcott's cross-shot was deflected in off substitute left-back Tyler Blackett.

And the Spaniard added: "I wasn't happy with the result because it wasn't a good result for us. It was a lucky goal for them. But I'm happy I made my debut."

Valdes denied it has been frustrating sitting on the bench for the past four months, saying: "No, it's been good, all good. My teammates have treated me well here.

"The coach has treated me well, as well. The truth is that it has all been good. And the fans, they are an incredible group of fans. To come on and be welcomed like that is incredible for a footballer."
