Raphael Varane made Zidane call him back about Real Madrid move
Raphael Varane has revealed that he asked Zinedine Zidane to call him back when he phoned to convince him to move to Real Madrid -- because he was studying for exams.
After the centre-back established a reputation as a star of the future at Lens, France legend Zidane played a central role in persuading him to reject other approaches and join Madrid in 2011.
However, France international Varane told France Football he had not initially wanted to talk to his illustrious compatriot because he was focusing on his Baccalaureat qualifications.
"I was right in the middle of my revision, and the telephone was ringing non-stop for my future transfer," he said. "At 18 years old, you don't necessarily have the experience to handle that kind of situation.
"Among all the calls, there was one from Zizou, who wanted to talk to me about Real's interest.
"As I didn't recognise him straight away, and it was early in the evening and I was tired, I didn't let him talk too much. Without really thinking, I asked him to call me back later."
Varane has gone on to play 82 times for Los Blancos, and was part of the France squad that reached the World Cup quarterfinals in the summer.
