United closer to Angel di Maria deal

FC's Craig Burley analyses where Angel Di Maria will fit in to Manchester United's squad should he sign.

Manchester United are making progress in their attempt to sign Angel di Maria from Real Madrid.

- Ancelotti: Khedira staying put
- Brewin: Woodward has to deliver Di Maria

The former Premier League champions are set to pay an initial 75 million euros for the Argentina international winger in a deal that will include a potential further 15 million euros in add-ons.

Sources in Spain told ESPN FC on Sunday that the way the deal would be structured meant United would be likely to end up paying 80 million euros.

They are waiting to see whether the move can be concluded on Monday or whether ongoing negotiations mean it is not finalised until later in the week, sources told ESPN FC.

Di Maria is arrived in Manchester at 7 p.m. ahead of a medical before what would be a British record transfer.

The deal would top the 50 million pounds Chelsea paid for Fernando Torres from Liverpool in 2011, and smash United's highest figure, the 37.1 million spent to bring in Juan Mata in January.

If Di Maria does costs 80 million euros -- as ESPN FC reported that he is expected to -- the deal would equate to 64 million pounds and take United's spending this summer to 136 million pounds.

ALL-TIME HIGHEST TRANSFER FEES

1) £85m Gareth Bale -- Tottenham to Real Madrid, Sept. 2013

2) £80m Cristiano Ronaldo -- Man Utd to R Madrid, June 2009

3) £75m Luis Suarez -- Liverpool to Barcelona, July 2014

4) £71m James Rodriguez -- Monaco to Real Madrid, July 2014

5) £59.7m Angel Di Maria -- R Madrid to Man Utd, August 2014

6) £56m Kaka -- AC Milan to Real Madrid, June 2009

On Sunday, sources in Spain said a fee had been agreed, and Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti confirmed earlier that day that Di Maria was on his way out of the Bernabeu.

"It is not fully done, but he is close to a transfer," he said. "He came to say goodbye. We thanked him for what he has done for this team and we wished him luck for the future. It is not official, but it is resolved."

Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso -- formerly of Liverpool -- also tweeted: "Thank you for everything Fideo! I wish you the best, even though it is Manchester United :) We will never forget the zigzag in extra time in Lisbon."

However, United boss Louis van Gaal, speaking after his side's 1-1 draw with Sunderland on Sunday afternoon, remained coy over the deal.

He told Sky Sports: "I think always the club has to announce it and when we are thinking it's the right time for a transfer then we come to you and say: 'OK, we have bought that player or the other player.' But at this time we cannot say anything."

United face League One MK Dons in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday, but Di Maria would not be eligible for that game even if his transfer is completed before then.

However, he would be available to make his debut at Burnley on Saturday provided that he is registered by midday on Friday.
