Toni Kroos' move to Madrid agreed

ESPN FC's Raf Honigstein weighs in on Toni Kroos' £24 million move to Real Madrid from Bayern Munich

Toni Kroos is set to be unveiled as a Real Madrid player on Thursday evening after Bayern Munich confirmed an agreement had been reached with the European champions.

Kroos, 24, had turned down Bayern's offer of a new contract beyond 2015 and the Bavarians have now cashed in on the Germany international, earning a fee believed to be between 25 and 30 million euros.

The player's agent Volker Struth confirmed the move to Sport1 on Thursday morning, while Bayern's chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge thanked the player for his time at the club.

"We would like to thank Toni Kroos for his time in Munich," he said. "We enjoyed great success with him here and we now wish him and his family all the best in Madrid."

Kroos played every minute of Germany's triumphant World Cup campaign, and was a long-time target for Manchester United.

He met with his agent in Mallorca immediately after his return from the World Cup, and a deal was then struck with Real.

Real president Florentina Perez said the late club legend Alfredo di Stefano would have enjoyed Kroos' acquisition.

"Today we are missing somebody who has attended these unveilings in recent years," Perez said. "It will not be easy to live without Alfredo di Stefano. We know that he will remain with us for eternity. I am sure that Alfredo would be excited about our new signing, Toni Kroos, who showed his ability at the World Cup. It was not a surprise, but the confirmation of what we already knew. Welcome to Real Madrid, Toni."

The midfielder has signed a six-year deal in the Spanish capital, where he joins compatriot Sami Khedira.

The two world champions might not get to play in the same team, however, with Khedira linked with a move to Arsenal or Chelsea, where he would be reunited with former Real player Mesut Ozil.

The former Hansa Rostock midfielder spent the 18 months on loan at Bayer Leverkusen up to June 2010, making 48 appearances for them and scoring 10 goals.

Since returning to Bayern, he has played 205 times in four seasons, scoring 24 goals and winning the Bundesliga three times, the DFB-Pokal three times, the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup.
