Sevilla announce Iago Aspas deal

Iago Aspas failed to make the grade at Liverpool

Liverpool forward Iago Aspas is on the brink of a return to Spain after Sevilla announced they had reached an agreement for the transfer of the player.

Aspas, 26, joined Liverpool 12 months ago from Celta Vigo for 7.7 million pounds but struggled to make an impression in English football. Subject to a medical, he will join Sevilla on loan for the season with a view to a permanent transfer.

He made just five Premier League starts last season, with his only goal coming in a 2-0 FA Cup third-round win over Oldham on Jan. 4.

Liverpool had considered offering Aspas in part-exchange for Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno and do still have hopes of signing the defender despite being unable to agree a fee with the Primera Division side. But if the deal is to be resurrected, it will now be done separately.

Last season's Europa League winners issued a statement on their official website which read: "Sevilla FC and Liverpool FC have reached today a tentative agreement for the loan, with an option to purchase, the player Iago Aspas.

"He will wear the shirt of Sevilla FC for the 2014-15 season. At the end of the campaign, Sevilla FC may exercise a clause to purchase the player on a three-year contract with an option for a fourth.

"The president of Sevilla FC, Jose Castro, and the executive director of Liverpool FC, Ian Ayre, have closed this tentative agreement, which is subject to the Galician footballer passing a medical examination and the drafting of contracts between both the clubs and the player, with which there is already an agreement, to be formalised."

Liverpool are also expected to unveil winger Lazar Markovic on Tuesday in a 20 million-pound move from Benfica to Liverpool. He arrived in England on Monday for a medical which is believed to have gone smoothly.
