Jack Butland not leaving Stoke City, says Mark Hughes

Mark Hughes has dismissed fears over Jack Butland's Stoke future and insisted he is going nowhere.

The keeper has been linked with a move away from the Britannia Stadium in January after an impressive season.

Butland signed a four-year deal at Stoke in March and Asmir Begovic left for Chelsea in the summer to hand the keeper the number one spot.

He is set to face Sheffield Wednesday in the Capital One Cup quarterfinal on Tuesday and Hughes declared the 22-year-old will be staying at the club.

"Jack's going nowhere," he said. "He's progressing well but he's very early into his career development as a number one keeper. People are aware of him - and they have been for a long time.

"Jack forced his way into the England squad when he was 19 but he needs a season-in-season-out of week-in-week-out in the Premier League. He's had a great career progression, every step he's taken he's dealt with.

"Now it's about consolidating himself in a very good Premier League team. That's the challenge for him."

Hughes refused to put a price tag on Butland but admitted £20 million would not be enough when the figure was put to him.

The Stoke boss added: "Do I think that's a fair value? No. We wouldn't place a value on him anyway."

Butland was the League Cup hero for Stoke in their last round when they beat Chelsea 5-4 in a penalty shootout at the Britannia and he saved Eden Hazard's penalty to send them through to the last eight.

Hughes added: "It was a great save but it was a great performance on the night. A lot of things happened and Jack got the plaudits because it was a key moment and a decisive save in the time we needed him. Leading into that a lot of players put a hell of a shift in to get through."
