Xherdan Shaqiri joins Stoke from Inter Milan in record £12m deal

Xherdan Shaqiri has signed for Stoke in a £12 million move from Inter Milan, the club have confirmed.

Shaqiri, 23, was in the stands for Stoke's 1-0 opening defeat to Liverpool on Sunday after a potential move collapsed last month, but has now put pen to paper on a five-year contract.

The Switzerland international has scored 17 goals in 46 appearances for his country and was a member of the Bayern Munich squad that won the 2012-13 Champions League before he moved to Inter in January for around £14m.

Manager Mark Hughes told the club's website: "He's a dynamic and explosive player who will bring something different to the group and at the age of 23 he still has a great deal of potential.

"In the chats I've had with him it's obvious that he's excited about playing in the Premier League and showing what he's capable of."

Stoke chief executive Tony Scholes added: "It's no secret that we have been pursuing Xherdan for some time now and we are delighted to have finally secured his signature.

"He's an exciting young player who is really looking forward to playing in the Premier League having played at the very highest level in Germany with Bayern Munich and in Italy with Inter.

"Xherdan will be a fantastic addition to our squad and adds to the attacking options at the manager's disposal."

Shaqiri becomes the latest high-profile signing at the club, who also picked up Ibrahim Afellay, Glen Johnson, Marco van Ginkel, Shay Given, Joselu and Real Madrid defensive midfielder Sergio Molina among others this summer.
