Sporting KC coach Peter Vermes a target of Premier League clubs - report

Sporting Kansas City coach Peter Vermes has drawn the interest of two Premier League clubs and a European national team, according to the Kansas City Star.

In an interview with the Sporting KC boss, the newspaper reported that international agents representing two unnamed clubs have been calling Vermes to see if he would be willing to coach in England.

An unspecified national team has also reached out to the former U.S. international, the Star reported.

Vermes did not rule out a move, calling the conversations "intriguing."

"When anybody is interested in you, you would be lying if you said it wasn't intriguing," he says. "At this moment, my focus is on Sporting Kansas City."

Vermes, 49, has been technical director in Kansas City since 2006 and took on coaching duties three years later. He is under contract through 2017.

He won the league title in 2013 and has found success on a budget. Sporting KC rely almost entirely on players they acquired as youngsters in the MLS draft, and their highest-paid player acquired in any other method is Benny Feilhaber, who makes just $362,187.

Sporting KC has not paid a transfer fee for any of the players currently on the team.

Vermes' method of developing players is what has caught the attention of other teams, with Sporting CEO Robb Heineman telling the Star that the club had heard "tons of inquires around Peter" both domestically and abroad.

There is also "an undercurrent about whether Peter could go to the [United States] national team some day," Heineman said.
