Real Madrid's Carvajal takes 'second chance' with Super Cup winner

Real Madrid's Super Cup match-winner Dani Carvajal said he was delighted at having a "second chance" for glory after his injury in the Champions League final.

Madrid beat Sevilla 3-2 in a dramatic match in Trondheim on Tuesday, with Carvajal scoring the decisive goal late in extra time.

Debutant Marco Asensio fired his side in front midway through the first half, but Sevilla turned the game around through Franco Vazquez and Yevhen Konoplyanka's penalty before a 93rd-minute Sergio Ramos header forced extra time.

Sevilla, down to 10 men after the dismissal of defender Timothee Kolodziejczak, seemed set to hold out for penalties -- but then right-back Carvajal ran at a tiring defence and gave Madrid their second Super Cup success in three years.

The Spain international suffered his injury early in the Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid and also sat out Euro 2016.

He told AS: "We were up against it for the whole of the second half -- but the essence of Real Madrid is that you never give up, and a goal on 93 minutes and another right at the end of extra time makes us champions.

"Football always offers you second chances, particularly after the injury in Milan.

"I felt quite strong at the end of the game, I won the ball back and drove forward. Luckily it worked out, and it's amazing to score a goal in a final that wins you the title."

Asensio, who spent last season on loan at Espanyol, marked his full Madrid debut by scoring a spectacular 25-yard effort.

"I saw the shot clearly, it went in and I'm happy to have got my first goal for Real Madrid," Asensio said.

"A win and a goal -- you can't ask for more. I'm very happy to have won the trophy. We suffered, but we know never to give up in a final.

"We had to work hard to get the goal in the last minute. We held up well and Carvajal got a great goal. This is the direction we want to go in."
