His death was announced by Atletico Madrid on Monday evening.

Antic managed Atletico on three separate occasions, winning the league and cup double in 1995-96, one of the most successful seasons in the club's history.

He coached Real Madrid from March 1991 until January 1992 and took charge of Barcelona for a brief spell in 2003, as well as managing Real Zaragoza, Real Oviedo, Celta Vigo, and the Serbia national team at the 2010 World Cup.

"Today is a sad day for all Atletico fans and for the football world," Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo said in a statement. "A great person leaves us and one of the architects of Atletico Madrid's golden age. We'll always remember the Liga and Copa del Rey trophies that we won under his command. I'm proud to have known him."

"With the loss of Radomir, a piece of the heart of the club leaves us," the club's chief executive Miguel Angel Gil said. "With him I personally learnt to win, I learnt to live with passion the little things that make you a better man and a better professional."

"Sad for the loss of Radomir Antic. A legend of our Atleti leaves us today," club captain Koke Resurreccion said on Twitter. "The greatness of the club will always be represented in people like him."

Real Madrid also released a statement expressing "its sincerest condolences to his family and friends. These condolences also go out to the whole Madridista family and the clubs he represented throughout his sporting career as both a player and coach."

Barcelona tweeted: "Radomir Antic, who managed FC Barcelona in 2003, passed away today. The Barça family mourns the loss of a man who was deeply beloved in the world of football. Rest in Peace."
