Pele: Neymar needed to leave Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain

Brazil legend Pele has fully supported Neymar's recent move to Paris Saint-Germain, saying his compatriot "needed to move" from Barcelona in order to advance his career.

Since his €222 million move this summer, Neymar has bagged three goals and three assists in as many Ligue 1 appearances, and Pele believes that it was time for him to step out of Lionel Messi's shadow at Camp Nou.

"At the moment the best player in Brazil is Neymar and I think the move for him was very good because there was huge competition with Messi at Barcelona," Pele told Marca.

"I think it is a good opportunity for him and he needed to move because now he can really play and show what he is capable of.

"However, it is also very dangerous when you get given that responsibility."

Neymar has made no secret of his desire to win the Ballon d'Or during his career, something which looked unlikely at Barcelona, with Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo also dominant in La Liga.

And Pele believes that Neymar's move to PSG will aid him in his quest to win his first Ballon d'Or.

"Of course he can," Pele said. "Neymar has a football at his feet, which is all he needs. [Philippe] Coutinho is a player I think we should all look at too because he is excellent for his team.

"No doubts at the moment, though, that Neymar is the one."

Neymar and PSG get their Champions League campaign underway against Celtic in Glasgow next week.
