Tony Adams named Granada caretaker manager after Lucas Alcaraz sacked

La Liga strugglers Granada have appointed former Arsenal captain Tony Adams as their coach until the end of the season.

Granada, who are one place off the foot of the table and sacked Lucas Alcaraz on Monday, confirmed in a statement that the 50-year-old ex-England international would step in.

Adams, who had a short spell in charge of Portsmouth during their time in the Premier League and has also worked at Wycombe Wanderers and in Azerbaijan and China, takes charge with immediate effect.

His first game as caretaker comes at home to Celta Vigo on Sunday.

The statement said: "After evaluating the team's situation and the atmosphere in the group after recent results, Granada CF has decided to conclude Lucas Alcaraz's chapter and that of his technical team in charge of the first team.

"In his place, the club puts all its confidence in Tony Adams, vice-president of DDMC [a sports management company], as Granada CF's first team coach until the end of the season.

"Granada wants to thank Alcaraz and his staff for their personal and professional commitment and wishes them the best of luck in the future."

In October, Granada-born Alcaraz agreed to return for a third spell in charge following the sacking of Paco Jemez.

Since last year, Adams -- who won 66 England caps -- has been working as a vice-president of DDMC at both Chinese Super League club Chongqing Lifan and Granada.

Speaking to ESPN FC last August, he said: "I have been looking around for opportunities for a while now, and I have had a fantastic reception here in Chongqing. The fans are very knowledgeable about football."

"They are the best in the whole of China, respectful to the team and coach, and cheer in great numbers."
