Real Madrid want to sign Sevilla sporting director Monchi - reports

Real Madrid want to sign Sevilla's sporting director, Monchi, this summer, according to reports in Spain.

Marca claims that Real chief Florentino Perez is eager to strengthen the sporting department by adding the highly rated Monchi, a move that would boost his campaign with presidential elections expected to take place this summer.

It's not the first time that Monchi has been linked with the Bernabeu stadium outfit with Real having reportedly approached him in the summer of 2016 when he announced his wish to leave Sevilla at the end of last season for "personal reasons."

Monchi, who has not confirmed whether or not he will remain at the Andalucian outfit for a 17th straight campaign, told AS earlier this year: "I'm not thinking about the future, I'm just enthusiastic about the present.

"I will not break my contract unilaterally. I have a contract and both parts have to be in agreement."

Monchi still wants to leave the club this summer, according to Sevilla technical secretary Oscar Arias.

Arias told ABCdeSevilla this week: "Speaking to Monchi, I understand that his decision [to leave] is firm. What I don't know is when it will happen.

"If he left, we probably would lose the most important person at Sevilla right now."

Sevilla, who ruled out his departure last summer and stated that he was under contract until June 2020, are now willing, according to Marca, to let him go.

Marca claim Sevilla's board of directors last week granted Monchi permission to leave the club at the end of the season without having to pay the €10 million the club had requested as compensation last summer.

There is one condition and that is for the 48-year-old to return to the club in the future.

Monchi, a former Sevilla goalkeeper, has been instrumental in the team's sporting success and also pivotal in helping the club gain financial stability.

Sevilla have won nine trophies, including five Europa League titles, since Monchi became sporting director in 2000 with the team in the Segunda Division in Spain and in a financial crisis.

He was a reported target of Roma earlier this season, and stated in October that he would like an experience abroad in cities like Rome or Paris.
