Gaizka Garitano sacked as Deportivo La Coruna coach after winless run

Deportivo La Coruna have dismissed coach Gaizka Garitano following a dismal run of results that has left the team just above the relegation zone.

The club -- without a win in 2017 -- suffered a fourth straight league loss on Saturday, going down 4-0 at Leganes, and are two points clear of the drop in 17th place.

A Deportivo statement said: "The administration council of RC Deportivo has taken the decision to terminate the contract of Gaizka Garitano as coach of the first team.

"The club wishes to thank the Basque coach and his staff for their dedication, effort and professionalism during their time guiding the team.

"Deportivo B coach Cristobal Parralo will manage Monday's training session."

Garitano, 41, succeeded Victor at the helm last summer but managed only four wins in 23 league games and did not mastermind an away victory this season.

The former Real Sociedad player made a name for himself as a coach when he led Eibar to back-to-back promotions and into the top flight for the first time in their history in three seasons at the club between 2012 and 2015.

AS has reported that former West Bromwich Albion coach Pepe Mel is in contention to replace him.

Depor host Atletico Madrid on Thursday before travelling to Sporting Gijon on Sunday.
