Jorge Sampaoli plays down new deal, amid reported Barcelona interest

Sevilla coach Jorge Sampaoli is flattered that his club has offered him a one-year contract extension but says he is only focusing on the present.

Sevilla would like to extend his stay amid reports that he is the No. 1 candidate for the Barcelona coaching position should Luis Enrique depart the Catalan giants this summer.

"The fact that the club is considering extending my contract makes me happy and I value it," Sampaoli, whose current deal expires in June 2018, told the club's official website.

"I'm delighted and flattered that the valuation levels are such but right now the only thing that I want is to live the present.

"It's a bit difficult to think about the future without a real valuation. We live in the present and perhaps in two weeks' time this will not happen because it has to do with momentary success."

Sampaoli replaced Unai Emery at Sevilla last summer and is in his first experience coaching in Europe.

Sevilla are third in La Liga behind Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively, and host Leicester in the Champions League round-of-16 first leg on Wednesday.

"This is the most important game for us," Sampaoli said. "We are competing to be among the best eight teams in the world in the most important tournament there is and to think further ahead would be irresponsible from my part.

"In order to stay in a place for the long-term, one has to evaluate lots of things and have a more in-depth and complete analysis of the situation."

Sevilla president Pepe Castro said on Tuesday that both the club and Sampaoli can exercise a clause to terminate his contract for €1.5 million, something the Andalusian outfit hopes will not happen.

Sampaoli's decision to continue could be influenced by whether or not Sevilla sporting director Monchi stays put.

Monchi, at Sevilla for the last 16 years, has been instrumental in the club's sporting success and also pivotal in helping the club gain financial stability.

Linked with top European clubs last summer and with Roma earlier this campaign, Monchi's intention was to leave Sevilla at the end of last season for "personal reasons" but the Spanish club ruled out his departure and stated that he was under contract until June 2020 and would remain in his current position.

"Sevilla is the most important thing but if Monchi is not there you have to reconsider a lot of issues," Sampaoli said.

It was Monchi's decision to hire former Chile coach Sampaoli as Emery's replacement. Monchi recently reiterated that his ambition is to work in either France or Italy in the future.

The Spaniard told Agence France Presse as reported at Canal Supporters: "I have already said several times that sporting director models in France and Italy are perhaps the most attractive to me outside of Spain. Sporting directors there are given greater importance.

"There are other leagues, such as England, which are very attractive, but the sporting director roles there do not correspond to my needs."
